Named after the great Maine and Waikiki outfielder, the Mitchell Award rewards the player who is the top hitter in the league.
This year's award goes to....
Barry Bonds, Arkansas Golden Falcons
Was it ever in doubt? Barry Bonds had perhaps the single most impressive season in DMBL history. Bonds became the first person
to ever win the DMBL Triple Crown. Bonds won the batting title with a .346 average, 22 points ahead of second place Bernie Williams.
His 72 home runs were 17 ahead of Luis Gonzalez and Alex Rodriguez. Bonds' 176 RBIs were 31 more than Phil Nevin.
Bonds was simply dominant. Bonds also took the sabermetric triple crown, leading in on-base percentage (.520) and slugging percentage (.890)
and OPS (1.410), setting new league records in all three categories. Enough yet? Bonds also led the league in runs scored (163),
extra base hits (111), walks (170), and runs created (238.2).
Although Bonds has been perhaps the best player in DMBL history, this is his first ever Mitchell Award. Bonds came in second in the voting last year, losing out
to Vatican City's Carlos Delgado. Bonds leads in most offensive
categories over his career, including 438 home runs, 1422 RBIs, 1436 walks, a .587 slugging average and .431 on base percentage.
Bonds has amassed 191 stolen bases, a .296 batting average and 727 runs scored. Bonds was a member of all four Falcons championship
teams. He was a starter for Arkansas in all eleven season with the Falcons, except for 2000, when he only played in 83 games.
Bonds has hit 24 or more homers in each season and has had 100 or more RBIs in every year except 2000.
Bonds was a unanimous choice for the Mitchell Award.
Others receiving votes were Jsaon Giambi of Honolulu, Alex Rodriguez of Wanaque, Luis Gonzalez
of Phoenix, Vancouver's Sammy Sosa and Hoboken's Mike Piazza.
