Franchise History
The first player ever selected by the Sugar Bears was in the 1996 dispersal draft was Randy Johnson from the Waikiki Keys.
Newark, along with Toledo and Jerusalem were admitted to the league in 1996 when Waikiki, Charleston, and Tampa Bay folded.
Newark was the first team that wasn't an original six team to win a championship in 1997.
Memorable Moments
5/10/01: Randy Johnson throws the first complete game no hitter in league history.
3/31/01: The Sugar Bears rip Stanhope starter Andy Pettitte for 18 earned runs.
3/21/01: Newark sets a league record for most runs scored in a 33-11 drubbing of Philadelphia. It's also the DMBL record for highest combined score (44).
6/14/98: Newark sets a new DMBL record by teeing off for 10 homers against Honolulu pitching staff.
6/25/96: Ryan Klesko ties a league record with 6 runs scored.
5/9/96: Newark ties a league record, scoring 16 runs in one inning against Arkansas.
