Better Pitching In The Cards
Last year's Cardinal team had the second-best offense in the DMBL, scoring 1,049 runs on 262 homeruns and a league-leading 793 walks. Next year, the offense probably won't be quite as good -- Alex Rodriguez (.318, 52 HR, 135 RBI) is their only star to put up better numbers in 2001 than he did in 2000. But the pitching staff, which gave up the 12th-most runs (975) in the league last year, will likely be much improved with Matt Morris (22-8, 3.16), Bartolo Colon (14-12, 4.09), Kazuhiro Sasaki (0-4, 45 SV, 3.24) and Antonio Alfonseca (4-4, 28 SV, 3.07).
Turn Back the Clock Night
When the Cards open up their series with the Endzone Animals Thursday, they might look a little strange. That's because the team is bringing back vintage jerseys from their Cheyenne Warhawks days. "The Warhawks had a great winning tradition and we want to capture that glory" said team owner and GM Jeremy Berger. "The first 500 kids that show up will get a commemorative tomahawk." The Cheyenne Warhawks entered the league back in 1993 and have sinced move to Norfolk and subsequently to Hillsborough before finding their way halfway across the world in Vatican City.
A-Rod's secret to success
Shortstop Alex Rodriguez won't point to better workout regimens or work ethics when asked about his success this season. "It's divine intervention" says the shortstop. "Before the season started, I asked the pope to bless my bat, and being the great guy that he is, he obliged." Rodriguez left a pair of tickets for the pope, should he feel like attending a game, but the tickets have yet to be used. Rodriguez was recently named Player of the Week ending May 6.
